The American gaming industry has a more diverse workforce than other industries in the US, according to new research released by the American Gaming Association (AGA). The study found that gaming companies employ more workers from a minority background (61.1%) than the broader hospitality sector (52%), and the entire US workforce (42%).
More Minorities Working at Gaming Companies
The research was participated in by 26 AGA member organizations which provided data relating to gender, race/ethnicity, and job classification for their respective workforces. The data were analyzed and calculated based on different workforce diversity metrics by a third-party accounting firm.
Of the minorities working in the gaming industry, 23% are Hispanic and 19% are Black. These figures are also higher than the broader hospitality industry and the national workforce. When it comes to leadership composition, minorities account for 45% of first/mid-level managers and 34% of professionals at gaming firms, both of which also exceed benchmarks.
More Needs to be Done
The research also shows that 48% of gaming employees are women, which coincides with the national benchmark, though there was a drop in the number of women in senior roles.
AGA President and CEO Bill Miller welcomed the results of the research, saying it highlights the industry’s leadership on diversity. However, he noted that more needs to be done and there is still room for improvement.
