The NBA handed out a $10 million dollar fine and 1 year suspension to Robert Sarver earlier this month. Sarver who owns the Phoenix Suns – NBA franchise and Phoenix Mercury – WNBA franchise was found guilty of organizational deficiencies and workplace misconduct.
Those fancy words are a guilty verdict after an NBA investigation found that Sarver used the racist N word many times over the years and derogatory comments to women in the organization. The NBA owner accepted his fine and punishment and thought that the matter was settled with the penalties.
Sarver Decides To Sell Mercury and Suns Teams
Top players in the NBA protested the punishment Sarver received and called for Sarver to give up his position as team owner. The pressure imposed from fans, other NBA owners, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and senior executives within the Sun’s organization was too much for Sarver and he finally gave in and announced that he has decided to sell both the Phoenix Suns and Phoenix Mercury franchises.
Sarver said that while he would have liked to have stayed on and made amends for his past mistakes, it was clear in this unforgiving culture that it was in the best interests of both teams that he moved on. Sarver is now looking for buyers for both franchises.
