As the competition intensifies for three casino licenses on offer in downstate New York, companies involved in a proposal to build an entertainment venue with a casino in Coney Island, Brooklyn recently met with local residents to discuss the project.
The proposed $3 billion development, named “The Coney”, would feature a casino, indoor waterpark, hotel, and museum.
Community Members Express Opposition
Located on the boardwalk and the beach, The Coney would help revitalize the island, generate new jobs, and bring economic growth and world-class entertainment to Brooklyn and New York City. That’s according to the coalition pushing for the project which includes Thor Equities, Legends, Saratoga Casino Holdings, and The Chickasaw Nation.
But many members of the community remain opposed to the plan. Alice Pote of the tenant organization, The United Front Against Displacement, who attended the meeting, said a casino would only lead people to gambling addiction. Some are concerned that the development would increase traffic and crime in the area, while others have cast doubt on the project’s promises.
More than 3,000 Residents Support the Plan, Says Consultant
Nevertheless, proponents of the project are confident it would get enough support from the community. During last week’s meeting, Eric Koch, a consultant with Downfield, said more than 3,300 community members signed a petition in support of the proposed casino and hotel complex.
