How Illegal Casinos Operate on Roblox
Illegal online casinos are preying on young users of the popular video game Roblox, drawing children as young as 12 into gambling. An investigation by Sky News uncovered a disturbing scheme in which these casinos exploit Roblox accounts to facilitate gambling using the game’s in-game currency, Robux.
By allowing users to log in with their Roblox credentials, these platforms gain direct access to their accounts. Once inside, users can gamble with their Robux on slots and live casino games. Age verification is virtually nonexistent, with only superficial checks like ticking a box to confirm being over 18 or providing a date of birth.
Robux and the Gambling Cycle
When a user gambles, the casino transfers Robux from their Roblox account to an account controlled by the casino. In exchange, the user receives virtual gambling chips that can be used to play games on the platform. These chips can later be converted back into Robux or even cryptocurrency, which can be traded for real cash, creating a seamless cycle of gambling and potential monetary exploitation.
The Impact on Children
The scale of the issue is alarming. A 14-year-old boy in the United States revealed that he had gambled approximately 15 million Robux, equating to around £150,000. The investigation also named three key illegal casino websites—BloxFlip, Bloxmoon, and RBLXWild—which collectively attract 2.8 million users monthly and facilitate millions of pounds in bets.
UK Gambling Commission Takes Action
Following these revelations, the UK Gambling Commission launched an urgent investigation and blocked access to these sites for UK users. Andrew Rhodes, Chief Executive of the UKGC, condemned the operations, stating:
“Criminals will always try and find new ways to exploit people, including children. Illegal casino operators are criminals, supported by gangs and deeply embedded in the criminal underworld. It’s vital that we all work together to disrupt their activities.”
A Call for Greater Vigilance
This investigation highlights the urgent need for stronger safeguards to protect young users in online environments. Parents, platform providers, and authorities must collaborate to prevent exploitation and ensure that gaming remains a safe and positive experience for children. Global action and enhanced regulatory measures will be critical in dismantling these illegal operations and protecting vulnerable users.
