The stigma surrounding problem gambling remains a major barrier for people wanting to seek support and treatment. To address this issue, GambleAware has launched a new campaign called “Reach Out”, produced by its new creative agency, the Lucky Generals.
Importance of Encouraging Gambling Conversations
The new campaign aims to break down the stigma associated with gambling harms and encourage those who may be experiencing problems with their gambling to open up and seek support, according to GambleAware Chief Executive Zoe Osmond.
Osmond said people dealing with gambling harms often suffer silently as they find it hard to share their problems with their family and loved ones due to feelings of shame and embarrassment.
Reach Out is backed by various organizations including Citizens Advice which provides free confidential advice for people dealing with any problem, including those related to gambling.
Citizens Advice Chief Executive Dame Clare Moriarty said that those on lower incomes and living in more deprived areas are more at risk of experiencing gambling harms which is why it is important to normalize conversations about gambling.
Gambling Stigma Continues to Deter People from Seeking Support
GambleAware launched the campaign following new research which shows that three-quarters (75%) of people struggling with gambling harms remain hesitant to open up to loved ones about their problems because of stigma.
